Craig Carton Criticizes "Cancel Culture" After Announcer Firing
Radio host argues a newly hired announcer shouldn't lose his job over teenage social media posts.
Radio host Craig Carton has publicly criticized the Portland Trail Blazers' decision to fire their newly hired play-by-play announcer, Braiden Bell, citing "cancel culture" and the age at which Bell made the remarks.
Bell was dismissed after tweets from his teenage years, specifically from 2012 and 2013 when he was 14 years old, resurfaced. The tweets have been described as "racist and misogynist."
Carton, speaking on his show, expressed frustration with the situation, arguing that Bell's past remarks, made as a minor, should not define his adult career. "I'm not excusing what he wrote. I understand you finding it offensive, but he didn't write it as a mature adult," Carton stated. "He wrote it as a 14 year old. Are we really going to make decisions now and not allowing people to get jobs? Because when they were in high school, they put out a tweet that their friends might have found funny, and now it's going to impact this guy for the rest of his life."
Carton suggested that the act of uncovering such old posts was a deliberate attempt to find negative information, questioning the motive of the reporter who unearthed them. He advised aspiring professionals to meticulously clean their social media history before applying for positions.
"Before you apply for a job... clean out the Twitter account, clean out the Instagram," Carton urged. "Because you don't even remember the dumb s–t you said and posted when you were a child."
This incident highlights ongoing debates surrounding accountability for past online behavior, particularly concerning remarks made by individuals when they were minors.
