The Dallas Cowboys have released quarterback Joe Milton and claimed running back Emari Demercado off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs, the team announced Monday. These moves address depth concerns at both running back and quarterback.
The Cowboys had a limited running back corps with only Malik Davis behind starter Javonte Williams. Demercado, who previously spent three seasons with the Cardinals before signing with the Chiefs this offseason, brings additional experience to the position. In his NFL career, Demercado has rushed for 819 yards and three touchdowns on 126 carries, and has 50 receptions for 324 yards and one receiving touchdown.
Milton, who was acquired by the Cowboys in a trade with the New England Patriots prior to the 2025 season, had served as the team's backup quarterback. He completed 29 of 43 passes for 378 yards and three touchdowns during the preseason. The Patriots had drafted Milton in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Reports indicated that the Cowboys had explored trade possibilities for players before the roster cutdown deadline.
Demercado's NFL tenure includes a notable gaffe in October when he dropped the ball before crossing the goal line against the Titans, negating a potential touchdown and contributing to a comeback victory for Tennessee. His former head coach with the Cardinals, Jonathan Gannon, was fined $100,000 by the team for confronting Demercado about the play.
