Dallas Cowboys receiver George Pickens will play the 2026 season under the franchise tag, having not reached a long-term contract agreement by the Wednesday deadline. This ensures Pickens will earn approximately $27.3 million for the upcoming season, but his future with the team beyond 2026 remains in flux.

The Cowboys had previously announced their intention to postpone contract extension discussions until after the upcoming season, a plan Pickens acknowledged and appeared prepared for. "Like the tag and all that, it's just football first," Pickens told reporters during mandatory minicamp. "So, definitely play football first, kind of like I did last year, and then worry about [the contract]… Well let my agent worry about it, really."

Pickens joined the Cowboys in 2025 and quickly established himself as a key offensive player. In his first season with the team, he recorded career highs in receiving yards with 1,429 and scored nine touchdowns. This performance made him and CeeDee Lamb one of the league's most productive receiver duos, combining for over 2,500 receiving yards.

Prior to his time in Dallas, Pickens played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he amassed 1,140 receiving yards in 2023 and nearly 3,000 receiving yards over three seasons. However, even with Pickens' strong contributions, the Cowboys finished the 2025 season with a 7-9-1 record, hampered by a struggling defense.

The Cowboys organization has a history of players playing under the franchise tag. Since 2015, quarterback Dak Prescott, defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence, tight end Dalton Schultz, and running back Tony Pollard have all played seasons on the tag. While Prescott and Lawrence eventually signed long-term deals, Schultz and Pollard departed in free agency. The outcomes for players tagged by the Cowboys have varied, adding to the uncertainty surrounding Pickens' long-term status with the team.
