Cowboys Bring in Veteran Coach Pettine to Bolster Struggling Defense
Former NFL defensive coordinator Mike Pettine comes out of retirement to join Dallas as a senior defensive assistant.
The Dallas Cowboys have hired veteran NFL coach Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant, a move aimed at addressing the team's defensive struggles that have persisted since the 2025 season. The decision follows an upset home loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday Night Football.
Pettine, who had retired prior to the 2026 season, will work alongside defensive coordinator Christian Parker, who is in his first year leading the unit at age 34. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer stated that the team had been discussing the possibility of bringing Pettine on for some time and convinced him that it made sense.
Parker himself had approached Pettine about joining his staff when Parker was hired in January, seeking a familiar and experienced presence. Pettine previously served as defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers in 2019, when Parker was a quality control coach there. Schottenheimer also has a history with Pettine, having worked together on Rex Ryan's staff with the New York Jets.
Prior to his retirement, Pettine spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons as an assistant head coach for the Minnesota Vikings and was a senior defensive assistant with the Chicago Bears in 2021.
The Cowboys do not intend for Pettine to replace Parker but rather to collaborate with him. This move comes as the Cowboys' defense has struggled statistically, allowing the second-most yards per game in the NFL (395.4) and ranking last in run defense, giving up 168.4 yards per game. They are also 26th in points allowed per game at 27.2. The team's offensive unit, led by Dak Prescott, has been responsible for their wins, ranking seventh in the league in points per game.
Schottenheimer emphasized the importance of trust and a working relationship between Pettine and Parker for the collaboration to be effective. The Cowboys will face the Green Bay Packers, Pettine's former team, in a primetime matchup on Sunday Night Football in Week 6.
