Coventry has moved out of the Premier League relegation zone following a significant 4-1 victory over Newcastle United at the CBS Arena. This marks their first top-flight win in front of their home fans in 25 years, and their first time scoring four goals in a top-flight match since May 2000.

The win provides a crucial confidence boost for manager Frank Lampard's team, who are now 14th in the league. "It's big and we have to tap into that in a good way, in a humble way," Lampard stated, noting the rapid development of his players. Many on the squad have limited or no prior Premier League experience, including Jack Rudoni, Brandon Thomas Asante, and Ephron Mason-Clark.

Lampard acknowledged the challenging start to the season, with early fixtures against strong opponents like Arsenal, Manchester City, and Brighton. "This [win] gives good confidence, so it's the balance of confidence against overconfidence," he said. "But it's great when you have a template of feeling when you get a result of that level."

This performance follows a pattern of improvement, especially at home, where previous matches had resulted in a 1-0 defeat to Hull City and a 5-0 loss to Brighton. A Carabao Cup defeat to Aston Villa also underscored the need to secure points at the CBS Arena.

"We're going to be a relative underdog in pretty much every game," Lampard added. "So we have to maximise everything and be on the limit and I thought we were on the limit in loads of ways." He emphasized the importance of the team maintaining focus, stating, "They need to keep their feet on the ground because the next one's tough and the one after that will be tough."

Central to the victory was the performance of 19-year-old Sidiki Cherif, who made his first Premier League start after a summer move from Fenerbahce. Cherif repaid the faith with a goal from outside the box, becoming Coventry's youngest Premier League scorer since Robbie Keane in April 2000. This was also the first Premier League goal from outside the box for the club since David Thompson scored against Newcastle in January 2001.

"We've got a lot of belief in Sidi, a big signing for the club," Lampard said of Cherif, who also earned an early penalty. "Sometimes you don't realise he's 19. He'll be disappointed with the one he missed and I've said to him it's no problem because that's good. You get there, you get hungry, you go again. He's got that little edge to him in a good way."

Cherif's goal was a highlight, but Coventry's overall attacking prowess, which saw them score 97 goals in their Championship-winning season, was evident. With striker Hadji Wright sidelined due to a thigh injury, Cherif, a £20 million signing, is expected to carry a significant portion of the goal-scoring responsibility.

The upcoming fixtures for Coventry include away matches against Tottenham and Fulham, followed by home games against Sunderland, Everton, Crystal Palace, Leeds, and Ipswich, leading into December. The team aims to build on this performance and establish a platform for survival in the top flight. Lampard believes the team can make their home ground a difficult place for opponents, a feeling that had been missing in earlier home games this season.
