Coventry City has reached an agreement to sign Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi in a deal estimated to be worth around £17 million. The transfer is expected to be finalized before Coventry's Premier League season opener against Arsenal on Friday.

Awoniyi, 29, joined Nottingham Forest in 2022 from Union Berlin for a then-club record fee of £17.2 million. During his tenure with Forest, he scored 23 goals in 103 appearances across all competitions. However, he has seen limited playing time, often being behind Chris Wood and Igor Jesus in the team's striking options, and was not included in last season's Europa League squad. Last season, Awoniyi started just three matches, contributing four goals in 17 appearances.

In May 2025, Awoniyi experienced a serious injury when he ruptured his intestine after colliding with a goalpost during a match against Leicester. He was subsequently placed in an induced coma.

Coventry City, preparing for their return to the Premier League after a 25-year absence, has been active in the transfer market. The club has already brought in midfielder Gus Hamer from Sheffield United and goalkeeper Carl Rushworth on a permanent deal from Brighton. Winger Loum Tchaouna has joined from Burnley, defender Aurele Amenda from Eintracht Frankfurt, and Ghana international Caleb Yirenkyi from Nordsjaelland.

Coventry's current striking options include Brandon Thomas-Asante and Ellis Simms, with Haji Wright presently sidelined due to injury.
