Courtney Love revealed this week that she nearly died in 2019 during a harrowing and secret medical crisis. The 62-year-old singer, who has maintained sobriety after past struggles with cocaine, heroin, and pills, shared that her "body just exploded" during the ordeal.
Love recounted on Instagram that the illness led to severe hair loss and a drastic weight drop to approximately 100 pounds, despite her being nearly 5'10" tall. She stated that medical professionals informed her she was going to die. However, Love asserted her distrust of doctors, attributing it to her childhood experiences where adult figures would often contradict reality. This upbringing, she explained, led her to doubt the pronouncements of her medical team.
"When I was a kid - and I think this record is about this - I used to pattern-interrupt the adults, and they’d tell me 'red.' They’d say red was blue, and then I’d see blue, but blue was blue," Love said in a video posted Friday to her over one million Instagram followers. "So now that I gaslight myself that maybe, maybe they were right and red was blue, and then I would see purple, and my head would explode."
Despite the dire medical predictions, Love said she "somehow" recovered and is now healthy. She linked the experience to her upcoming album, which she described as "done" and "really good." She noted that while writing and recording the album, she was often in the hospital.
Love, known as the lead singer of the band Hole and the wife of the late Kurt Cobain, has not released an album since 2010's "Nobody's Daughter." She expressed a strong desire to tour and perform again, stating, "I want to tour more than anything. & I want to sing. That’s what keeps my soul & body happy."
