The UK government's decision to use a former military camp in Crowborough to house up to 540 men seeking asylum is facing a legal challenge, with a court hearing concluding on Wednesday. The Honourable Mr Justice Mould is expected to deliver a judgment at a later date after reviewing the arguments presented.
The Home Office announced plans for the site in October of the previous year, with the decision officially confirmed in January, which led to protests in the town. Crowborough Shield initiated a legal challenge in December, but it was initially dismissed in February as it predated the government's final decision.
Mr Justice Mould stated that the decision was "at least in principle" open to challenge. The Home Office and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government are listed as respondents in the legal action.
Campaigners have organized demonstrations against the government's plan to utilize the former military facility. These protests highlight the opposition to the housing of asylum seekers in the location.
