Operations at the Colosseum Mine in California's Mojave Desert have been halted by a federal court order, marking a significant setback for the Trump administration's efforts to boost domestic production of rare-earth minerals. The lucrative mine, which extracts gold and rare-earth minerals, was subject to a court order on Monday that suspended its operations.

Dateline Resources, the owner of the Colosseum Mine, expressed shock at the decision. "This decision is not supported by the facts or the legal precedent and we were certainly hoping for an even handed look at the actual law, but that’s not what we got," said Stephen Baghdadi, CEO of Dateline Resources, in a statement. He added that he was "shocked" the judge sided with the National Parks Conservation Association, which filed a lawsuit in April against the Trump administration regarding the site within the Mojave National Preserve.

Conservationists had argued that the mine's exploration activities were causing irreparable harm to the Mojave National Preserve. The White House had previously allowed Dateline to resume operations, a move conservationists contended needed updated approval from the National Park Service (NPS).

The Department of Justice had argued that the mine's operating plan was approved in 1985 by the Bureau of Land Management, predating the establishment of the Mojave National Preserve under the 1994 California Desert Protection Act. This, they contended, granted Dateline "valid existing rights" to continue its activities.

However, U.S. District Judge Christina Snyder rejected this interpretation. Snyder ruled that Dateline requires updated approval from the NPS to continue operating within the preserve, stating, "The decision to allow Colosseum Rare Metals to operate within Mojave National Preserve without an approval by NPS is contrary to law."

The preliminary injunction requires Dateline to immediately cease operations. The company has up to 10 weeks to safely secure the site and remove its equipment and personnel. The injunction will remain in effect while the lawsuit proceeds, unless Dateline secures the necessary NPS authorization or successfully challenges the court's order.

President Trump had supported efforts to develop the Colosseum Mine as part of a broader initiative to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign sources of rare-earth minerals, particularly China. During a recent roundtable on American mining, Trump commented on the situation, stating, "You had people that were just stopping it. They were using the environment to stop all of these things."
