Couple Sues Sony for $1.6 Million After TV Fire Destroys Home, Kills Pets

A Victorian couple is suing Sony for more than $1.6 million after alleging their television caught fire, destroying their home and killing their two pet dogs. Andrew and Denise Margaret Fyfe-Wright claim the blaze began on October 10, 2023, in their Healesville home, north-east of Melbourne.

According to documents filed with the Supreme Court of Victoria, the fire originated in the lounge room and was allegedly caused by their 55-inch Sony XR55X90J television, purchased in June 2021. The ensuing fire gutted the house and destroyed its contents.

Six Country Fire Authority brigades responded to the incident, but were unable to contain the blaze. A CFA spokesperson stated at the time that the fire was determined to be the result of an electrical fault in a flat-screen television located on the south wall of the lounge.

The couple's daughter, Stephanie, initiated a GoFundMe campaign that raised over $17,000 from the local community to assist them in rebuilding. In her appeal, she described the profound devastation, noting that her parents and sibling were left with only the clothes they were wearing. She also expressed the family's heartbreak over the loss of their two Cavoodles, Gus and Poppy, stating, "Our beautiful fur babies didn’t deserve this."

The lawsuit alleges that the television possessed a safety defect under Australian Consumer Law, asserting it was not of acceptable quality, not free from defects, and not safe for ordinary household use. The statement of claim asserts that the TV "can start or cause a fire" and that it did so in this instance.

The Fyfe-Wrights further claim that Sony, as the manufacturer, breached consumer guarantees regarding the product's fitness for purpose and freedom from safety defects. The claimed losses include an estimated $1.37 million for rebuilding the home, $110,550 for destroyed domestic contents, and $95,000 for temporary accommodation. The compensation sought for the loss of the two dogs is listed as "TBA."

The couple has been living in temporary accommodation for three years while assessing the full cost of rebuilding their lives. Sony Australia has not yet filed a defense and did not respond to a request for comment. The Fyfe-Wrights' legal team also declined to comment.
