Howard and Suze Rubin are listing their Pound Ridge, New York, home, known as "Buster's Retreat," for $2.9 million, and are pushing back against a viral narrative that they spent $2 million on renovations exclusively for their 9-year-old bearded collie, Buster.
"We didn’t spend $2 million renovating the house for the dog," Howard Rubin told The Post. He explained that the renovation costs encompassed a comprehensive overhaul of the property. This included significant upgrades to mechanical systems, appliances, internet infrastructure, and the addition of a new garage, which alone cost several hundred thousand dollars.
The couple's story gained traction online, prompting criticism from individuals who believed the Rubins had spent millions on their dog while others faced financial hardship. However, listing agent Sally Slater of Douglas Elliman noted that the extensive upgrades reflect Rubin's meticulous nature.
Rubin, a retired computer science professor and founder of Rubin Worldwide, stated his motivation was simply to ensure everything functioned optimally. The property features 16 security cameras, two backup generators, and dual internet feeds. Rubin also installed a termite protection system as a preventative measure, despite no existing termite issues.
While the property's renovations were extensive, Buster did receive numerous amenities. The four-bedroom, 3½-bathroom home, which spans 4,442 square feet on 2.76 acres, is fully fenced with pet-friendly turf and ample shaded areas to ensure Buster's safety from wildlife. The pool was also modified with a shallow sun shelf, allowing Buster to splash without needing to swim.
Inside, Buster has nine televisions throughout the house and reportedly enjoys watching "Paw Patrol" until he falls asleep. The floor-to-ceiling windows also allow him to observe deer outside.
The Rubins purchased the property in 2019 for $1.82 million, initially intending it as a getaway and a pet-friendly rental. However, the rental plan was abandoned due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The couple has a long history of caring for animals, having owned a variety of pets throughout their 56-year marriage. Suze Rubin previously worked as a veterinary technician and an EMT. They also previously owned a stable where Olympic riders trained and actor Christopher Reeve was a client.
Now 9 years old, Buster suffers from arthritis, which has contributed to the Rubins' decision to sell the home. They plan to relocate to their single-story home in Florida, where Buster will be better suited to the climate and terrain.
The property has already attracted interest since hitting the market, with at least one potential buyer visiting with her dog.
