A couple has resorted to securing their kitchen cupboards and fridge with locks after discovering a housemate was allegedly taking their food. The situation escalated when items, including energy drinks, scones, ramen, and Nutella, began disappearing from the shared pantry and refrigerator.
The couple, who share a designated pantry cupboard and a small fridge with other housemates in a five-person household, noticed their food supplies dwindling. Their concerns were compounded when other housemates also reported missing items from shared storage spaces.
Discovery and Confrontation
Suspicion fell on a 21-year-old housemate, identified as Karla, who had moved in approximately three months prior. The couple reported finding an empty scone box in Karla's room, which they considered evidence of her involvement.
When confronted, Karla reportedly denied taking the food. The couple stated that they had not observed her purchasing her own groceries since moving in.
Security Measures and Housemate Agreement
Following the discovery, the couple decided to purchase locks for their pantry cupboard. They also planned to acquire a lock for their fridge and freezer. These measures were discussed and agreed upon with the other housemates. To further track their belongings, the couple began numbering items stored on shelves outside the locked cupboard.
"It sucks that I have to do this. But in an already poor financial situation, I cannot be wasting money on extra food," one of the couple stated. They expressed that they would have been willing to share if Karla had simply asked for food, emphasizing that the issue was unauthorized taking rather than a refusal to share.
Potential Escalation
The couple indicated that if Karla tampers with the locks, they intend to report the matter to their landlord. Given their month-to-month lease, they believe this could facilitate eviction proceedings against an individual tenant.
Shared Experiences
Similar incidents involving housemates taking food without permission have been reported by others. Anecdotes shared include housemates consuming homemade food left on counters, taking entire pizzas, and raiding clearly labeled pantries. In many instances, individuals expressed a willingness to share if asked, but objected to items being taken without consent.
