Couple Jailed for Life for Murder of Vulnerable Man They Abused

Kenneth Newton, 58, and Melanie James, 64, have been jailed for life with a minimum of 21 years each after being convicted of the murder of Rubin Blount. The court heard that Mr. Blount, who had severe learning difficulties and could not live independently, died in November 2022 weighing just 40kg (6st 4lb).

Mr. Blount was found to have suffered extensive pneumonia, severe dehydration and malnutrition, cardiac arrest, and numerous fractures, including 50 rib fractures, 47 of which were inflicted in the weeks leading up to his death. Doctors also found burns, lesions, and grazes on his body.

During the trial, prosecutors detailed how Newton and James mocked Mr. Blount's appearance and intellect, subjected him to abhorrent living conditions, and forced him to stand for long periods and lie in his own urine. They also allegedly made him eat from bins.

Mrs. Justice Jefford, presiding over the case, stated that the couple abused their position of trust and demonstrated an 'abject failure' to provide adequate care. She highlighted video evidence from November 2, 2022, showing Mr. Blount as 'emaciated, gaunt, stooped and broken,' and described how the defendants mocked his condition and found their abusive behavior amusing.

The judge noted that Mr. Blount had been confined to the house for approximately two months before his death and that the defendants only sought medical help when he was beyond saving, likely out of self-preservation. She added that Newton attempted to create a false narrative that Mr. Blount had sustained injuries from falls, while James allegedly spread false information about him to authorities to cover up the abuse.

In a victim impact statement read to the court, Mr. Blount's mother, Jeanette Blount, expressed her grief and heartbreak, stating that her son deserved compassion, dignity, and a chance to live his life. She emphasized that his future was stolen and the family must now endure a lifetime of sorrow.

During sentencing, a member of the public in the court shouted 'rot in hell' at the convicted couple. Defense attorneys argued for leniency, with one suggesting James's actions might be linked to her own difficult past. However, the judge emphasized the severity of the prolonged cruelty and the defendants' deliberate actions against a profoundly vulnerable individual.
