Couple Jailed for Life for Murder of Vulnerable Man
A couple has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a 28-year-old man who was subjected to months of abuse, including being forced to eat from bins and left to lie in his own urine.
Kenneth Newton, 58, and Melanie James, 64, were each sentenced to life with a minimum of 21 years for the murder of Rubin Blount, 28. Mr. Blount died in November 2022, weighing just 40kg (6st 4lb), after being subjected to prolonged abuse by the couple at their home in Tamworth, Staffordshire.
During the trial, prosecutors described how Newton and James mocked Mr. Blount's appearance and intellect, forcing him to stand for long periods and leaving him in unsanitary conditions. Mr. Blount, who had severe learning difficulties and could not live independently, was found to have 50 rib fractures, the majority inflicted in the weeks leading up to his death. He also suffered from pneumonia, severe infection, and burns.
Mr. Blount was taken to the hospital in November 2022 after becoming unwell. He was resuscitated following a cardiac arrest upon arrival but died three days later. Doctors discovered the extent of his injuries and malnourishment, indicating he had been in extreme pain and suffering.
Mrs. Justice Jefford, presiding over the case, stated that the couple abused their position of trust and showed an "abject failure" to provide care. She highlighted video evidence from November 2, 2022, showing Mr. Blount emaciated and "broken," while the defendants mocked his condition and found the abuse amusing. The judge concluded that the couple assaulted him repeatedly and did nothing to help him until they sought medical attention, likely out of self-preservation.
In a victim impact statement, Mr. Blount's mother, Jeanette Blount, expressed her grief and stated that her son deserved compassion and dignity. She noted that the family believed Newton and James would care for him and had no reason to suspect otherwise. "His future was stolen and our family must now live with a lifetime of heartbreak," she wrote.
During sentencing, a member of the public shouted "rot in hell" at Newton and James. Defense attorneys for both defendants acknowledged the severity of their actions, with James's counsel suggesting a history of abuse may have contributed to her behavior, stating, "the abused becomes the abuser." Newton's counsel argued that while Mr. Blount was challenging to care for, the couple was ill-equipped.
The judge also noted that Melanie James had made "wicked lies" to authorities, falsely accusing Mr. Blount of aggression and searching for child pornography, possibly to cover up the true nature of events in the home.
