A couple intending to construct an eco-home in rural Wales has received approval from Pembrokeshire County Council to raise small-scale livestock, including guinea pigs, for food. Dave and Mayu Phillips were granted planning permission for their development, which also encompasses plans for pigeons and rabbits to be raised for meat as part of their sustainable living goals.
During a planning committee meeting, Mr. Phillips, whose family has resided in Pembrokeshire for generations, explained the project as his contribution to the region's future. The development features a low-impact dwelling, aims to increase honey and walnut production, and allows for the keeping of small animals. He clarified that the guinea pigs intended for consumption differ from pets, describing them as being bred for meat similarly to rabbits.
The proposal aligns with the One Planet Development policy in Wales, which supports sustainable living and working on personal land and permits development on rural sites that might not otherwise qualify. Mr. Phillips expressed his and his wife's strong commitment to the One Planet movement's principles, emphasizing the finite nature of Earth's resources and the importance of practical steps toward sustainability.
