Count Binface, a political candidate known for wearing a garbage can on his head, is vying for a seat in Parliament in a special election in Clacton-on-Sea, England. The election was called after Reform UK leader Nigel Farage resigned from Parliament and announced his intention to seek reelection. Binface, who has previously run against multiple British prime ministers, declared "Game on, Nige" upon Farage's announcement.
The major political parties reportedly boycotted the election, positioning Binface as a de facto challenger to Farage. Binface, who describes himself as an intergalactic space warrior, has been actively engaged in media appearances. "I'm the only fresh thing on the menu," he told The Associated Press. "You need something different, a little bit of secret sauce."
The individual behind the Count Binface persona is comedian Jon Harvey. Harvey, a former television writer for political comedy shows like "The Thick of It," has been a candidate for nearly a decade. His political alter ego, initially known as Lord Buckethead, originated from a copyright dispute and was later rebranded as Count Binface. He has previously run against prominent figures including former Prime Minister Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Rishi Sunak, and London Mayor Sadiq Khan.
Binface's platform includes a mix of satirical and specific policy proposals. Among them are promises to "cut your taxes, and raise everyone else's," build one affordable home, and nationalize singer Adele. He also advocates for relocating a hand dryer in a specific pub's men's restroom and has proposed barring Members of Parliament who resign midterm from running in subsequent by-elections. In a veiled reference to Farage's alleged financial improprieties and trips to the United States, Binface stated he would not accept large gifts from "crypto billionaires" and would spend more time in Clacton than in Washington, D.C.
Binface has indicated he has no interest in Donald Trump, calling him "awful," but expressed a desire to strengthen relations between Britain and the U.S., suggesting a "galactic union."
While Binface does not expect to win, he acknowledges the possibility. If elected, he would have to comply with House of Commons rules requiring businesslike attire, barring costumes. Some members of Parliament are reportedly discussing making an exception for his headgear.
In addition to Count Binface, the Clacton ballot includes other unconventional candidates, such as three members of the Monster Raving Loony Party, including Nick the Incredible Flying Brick and Baron von Thunderclap. This reflects a tradition of eccentric candidates in British elections, where almost any adult citizen can run for office.
