Could You Survive Being Swallowed by a Whale? Experts Weigh In Amid 'Whalefall' Release
Marine scientists explain the rare possibility of a sperm whale engulfing a human and the grim survival odds within.
The newly released film "Whalefall" has reignited a primal fear: the scenario of being swallowed whole by a whale. While often depicted in fiction, experts suggest that for most whale species, such an event is physically impossible due to the limitations of their anatomy. However, a notable exception exists with the sperm whale.
Marine scientists explain that while the vast majority of whales possess throats too narrow to accommodate a human, sperm whales, which can reach up to 60 feet in length and prey on large creatures like giant squid, have a pharyngeal cavity wide enough to potentially engulf a person. Joy Reidenberg, a comparative anatomist who consulted on "Whalefall," confirmed to Science News that a very large, adult male sperm whale, at the extreme end of its size range, could theoretically swallow a human.
However, the possibility of being swallowed is distinct from the likelihood of survival. In a widely reported incident in 2021, a Massachusetts lobster diver was briefly trapped inside the mouth of a humpback whale. Experts noted that while the humpback's mouth was large enough to engulf him, its throat, described by Nicola Hodgins of Whale and Dolphin Conservation as being about the size of a human fist, prevented him from being swallowed. He was expelled by the whale, likely realizing its mistake.
Should a human somehow be swallowed by a sperm whale, the conditions inside would be extremely perilous. The film "Whalefall" depicts the diver relying on his scuba tank's dwindling air supply. Scientists emphasize that beyond the limited oxygen, the interior of a whale is dark, cramped, and filled with digestive fluids.
Furthermore, sperm whales often hunt deep in the ocean, diving to depths that would be lethal to an unprotected human. The immense pressure, even if somewhat mitigated inside the whale, would pose a significant hazard. The whale's digestive system, comprising multiple compartments designed to break down prey like squid, would also present an immediate threat, alongside potential suffocation, heat, and the constant motion of the animal as it swims and dives.
Joy Reidenberg, a consultant for "Whalefall," stated that while a large sperm whale could swallow a human, survival would be highly unlikely.
