The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public health alert for Red's Steak, Cilantro and Lime Burrito products sold at Costco due to an undeclared allergen.
The affected burritos were produced on June 19 and contain egg, a common allergen that was not disclosed on the ingredient label. The product was shipped to Costco distribution centers in Illinois, Michigan, and Minnesota. Consumers who have purchased these burritos are advised not to consume them and to either discard them or return them to the place of purchase.
The burritos are packaged in 3lb 2oz cartons containing 10 individually wrapped burritos. The front of the package reads 'RED'S STEAK CILANTRO AND LIME BURRITO.' Lot numbers on the side of the package include: L1 SD6170 1503, L1 SD6170 1535, L1 SD6170 1606, L1 SD6170 1639, L1 SD6170 1717, L1 SD6170 1750, L1 SD6170 1831, L1 SD6170 1908, L1 SD6170 1954, L1 SD6170 2031, L1 SD6170 2108, L1 SD6170 2130. The establishment number 'EST. 46069' is printed inside the USDA mark of inspection on individual burritos.
FSIS stated that a recall was not requested because the products are no longer available for purchase. However, the agency expressed concern that some consumers may still have the product in their freezers.
There have been no confirmed adverse reactions or illnesses reported in connection with these burritos. However, exposure to undeclared egg can cause anaphylaxis in individuals with an egg allergy. Symptoms can include hives, swelling, wheezing, shortness of breath, and difficulty swallowing. Severe reactions can lead to anaphylactic shock, a life-threatening condition.
Egg allergy is the second most common food allergy in children in the U.S., affecting nearly one percent of young children, although about 70 percent outgrow it by adolescence. About 3 million Americans have an egg allergy overall.
This alert follows other recent warnings about foods with undeclared allergens. Earlier this year, Fly by Jing Creamy Sesame Noodles were recalled from Whole Foods due to potential undeclared peanuts. In May, FSIS issued an alert for Giovanni Rana Rustic Beef Sauce & Creamy Burrata Cheese Ravioli due to a labeling error that may have resulted in shrimp filling in lobster sauce being packaged as beef and burrata ravioli. No illnesses were reported from that incident.
