Costco's Churro Return Sparks Fan Outrage Over 'Twisted' Dough and Price Hike

Costco's announcement of the return of its popular food court churro has been met with a mixed reaction from fans, with many expressing disappointment over the specific version being brought back and its increased price.

The big box retailer shared the news via an Instagram video, initially sparking widespread excitement among its 2.5 million followers. The churro, which had been a staple until its replacement by a Double Chocolate Chunk Cookie in 2024, was anticipated to make a comeback for the first time since its discontinuation.

However, the elation was short-lived as shoppers realized Costco was reintroducing its 'twisted' churro, rather than the original 'straight' version that was removed from menus in 2020. Online discussions and social media comments reveal that many consumers find the twisted shape to be "too bready" and lacking the satisfying crunch of the original. "You brought back the WRONG CHURRO," one disappointed shopper stated on Instagram, echoing sentiments from numerous others who felt the company had misinterpreted the demand for a churro return.

Adding to the discontent, the reintroduced twisted churro is reportedly 50% more expensive than its original price of $1. This price increase has further fueled fan frustration, with some lamenting the higher cost for what they perceive as an inferior product.

The return of the twisted churro has also prompted some customers to voice grievances about other discontinued Costco food court items. Mentions of the return of the combo pizza and hand-dripped ice cream with almonds, both removed from the menu years ago, have resurfaced in online discussions.

Despite the current dissatisfaction, Costco continues its expansion, with plans to open 10 new U.S. stores and expand in nine states. The company aims to open 30 new locations annually in the coming years, suggesting potential for future menu adjustments or the reintroduction of other fan-favorite items.
