Costco, a leading U.S. retailer, is implementing a new safety measure in its parking lots by installing bollards around store entrances. This change is designed to prevent cars from parking or driving directly in front of the store, thereby reducing traffic congestion and enhancing pedestrian safety.
The initiative, which has gained significant traction on social media, has led to widespread calls from shoppers for the rollout to be expanded to all Costco locations nationwide.
A Reddit post highlighting the upgrade at one warehouse described the change as making it "much less congested and safer to walk out of the store." The post prompted discussions among shoppers, with many sharing that their local stores also feature similar safety installations.
Some Costco warehouses have utilized temporary solutions, such as cones, as seen at the Cherry Hill location, or as a crowd-management tactic during the pandemic. Other stores, like the one in Marina del Rey, California, have adopted a modified version of the barricade. In Gilbert, Arizona, bollards were installed specifically to protect customers from distracted drivers. IMAGE4
The primary functions of these bollards are to redirect traffic away from congested areas, shield customers from errant vehicles, and prevent parking directly in front of entrances, which can pose a fire hazard.
Despite the perceived safety benefits, some shoppers noted that the measures have not entirely deterred reckless driving. Reports emerged of individuals attempting to drive around the bollards or onto sidewalks, necessitating further interventions like the use of shopping carts to block access.
Many shoppers expressed strong approval for the safety-focused parking lot updates. They highlighted concerns about the chaotic nature of Costco parking lots, citing the combination of shoppers loading vehicles, carts being pushed, and fast-moving cars as a potential danger. "Between people parking to load, customers flying out pushing carts and no care for stopping and cars driving way too fast - I am shocked no serious issue has happened," one user commented. Others echoed these sentiments, describing the front of stores without these protections as feeling "very unsafe."
In Bellevue, Wisconsin, temporary concrete blocks have been used near an intersection leading into a Costco warehouse, restricting turns and paving the way for a permanent barrier expected in the fall.
While these parking lot improvements are underway, some customers continue to describe Costco's parking lots as "disorganized" compared to those of other major retailers like Walmart, Kroger, and Meijer.
Despite these parking lot challenges, Costco remains a popular retail destination, boasting a larger membership base than competitors such as Sam's Club and BJ's Wholesale. The company offers various membership tiers, with fees starting at $65 annually for Gold Star/Business memberships and $130 for Executive memberships, granting access to amenities like food courts and gas stations. Costco also expanded its services by opening its first standalone gas station in Mission Viejo, California, this past summer. IMAGE2 IMAGE3
