A medium cappuccino from Costa Coffee contains the highest amount of caffeine among popular hot drinks from five major high street retailers, according to an analysis by consumer experts at Which?. The beverage was found to have 325mg of caffeine, a level equivalent to four 250ml cans of Red Bull, each containing 80mg.
The analysis, which examined drinks from Caffè Nero, Costa, Greggs, Starbucks, and Pret a Manger, found considerable differences in caffeine content across similar beverages. Costa's medium cappuccino was significantly higher in caffeine than cappuccinos from Greggs (235mg) and Caffè Nero (221mg).
When it came to espresso, Pret a Manger's single shot contained the most caffeine at 180mg, while Starbucks' espresso had the least with 45mg. Matcha lattes also showed variation, with Costa's option containing 99mg and Starbucks' version having 57mg.
The British Heart Foundation generally considers up to 400mg of caffeine per day safe for most adults. However, experts advise that excessive consumption can lead to increased heart rate and palpitations, especially for sensitive individuals. Jessica Carson, a Which? health and wellbeing expert, noted that caffeine content varies widely and advised consumers to be mindful of their choices, particularly if drinking multiple cups or needing to reduce intake for health reasons.
Americanos also displayed a wide range of caffeine levels. A medium americano at Starbucks contained 89mg, while the same drink at Costa contained 325mg.
Costa Coffee provided a statement acknowledging the variations, stating that caffeine and nutritional information are available across their menus and online to help customers make informed choices. They also offer decaffeinated and non-caffeinated options, noting that caffeine levels naturally vary based on factors like coffee blend, recipe, and serving size.
