Cornwall Council Cracks Down on Fly-Tipping with Increased Fines

Cornwall Council is implementing stricter penalties, including potential fines of up to £5,000, to combat the growing problem of fly-tipping.

The council recorded 17,500 incidents of illegal dumping over the last five years, prompting the introduction of the new crackdown. "We work hard to identify those responsible for illegal dumping and will hold offenders to account wherever possible," said Sarah-Jane Brown, group leader for community protection at Cornwall Council.

Councillor Thalia Marrington, council cabinet member for community safety and public protection, emphasized the detrimental impact of fly-tipping. "Fly-tipping can cause serious harm to our communities, the environment and wildlife," she stated. "It also costs councils and landowners huge amounts of money to clear up."

The council is urging residents to assist in prevention efforts by reporting any information that could help trace those responsible for dumping rubbish. "We're asking people to play their part and work with us to prevent fly-tipping, and to share any information that may help us trace those responsible for dumping rubbish," Brown added.

Illegal dumping involves the unlawful disposal of waste, which can range from household refuse to larger items like tires and construction debris. Such activities not only blight landscapes but also pose environmental and health risks, including pollution of soil and water sources, and harm to wildlife.
