Cornwall Beach Fight Over Boogie Boarding During Storm Deemed 'Tourist-on-Tourist' Fracas

A confrontation on a Cornwall beach during Storm Austen, which brought 80mph winds, has been characterized by locals as a "tourist-on-tourist" incident. The altercation occurred when a father, with his family in wetsuits and carrying boogie boards, headed towards the sea at Polzeath Beach on Friday, October 23. Footage shows an unidentified man approaching the group, with witnesses believing he advised the father against entering the water due to the storm.

During the exchange, the father, after approaching the walker in a distinctive side-on, crouched stance, punched him once. The man did not appear to stumble from the impact. A surf shop worker noted that most local businesses had closed due to the storm and did not recognize the individuals involved, stating, "From what I know it was tourist-on-tourist." The worker also commented on the unusual fighting posture, with social media users reportedly joking that the man "fights like a crab."

One local observer mentioned that the beach was closed due to the storm, with the family being the only people present. The witness described the punch as not being particularly forceful and questioned the approach taken by the walker to elicit such a reaction. The father's wife also reportedly became involved in the argument. RNLI lifeguards spoke to the father afterward, describing him as "difficult but not aggressive."

Another witness recounted seeing the family, including young children, attempting to enter the rough water. Shortly after, a passer-by approached the water's edge, presumably to voice safety concerns. The father then allegedly sprinted out of the water, confronted the passer-by, and threw the punch. The passer-by reportedly shrugged off the incident.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that the incident was not reported to them. The video of the confrontation, posted on Facebook, has garnered thousands of views. Commenters expressed confusion over the parent's aggressive response to someone offering safety advice, with one stating, "If you enter the sea in these conditions, not only are you putting yourself but also rescuers' lives at risk."

The red flag, indicating dangerous sea conditions, had been flying for several days prior to the incident, highlighting the treacherous nature of the water during the storm.
