Austin Franco, a Cornell University student who gained notoriety for making antisemitic statements during a job interview, has announced that his parents are expelling him from their home. Franco, 19, has turned to online fundraising platforms to solicit financial support for his housing needs. He stated on X that he will be evicted on August 1st and is seeking assistance from "twisted supporters."
Franco's parents, Alexander and Diana Franco, confirmed they are removing their son from their Virginia home, describing his views as "morally repugnant" and attributing them to "extremist online content." They expressed love for their son and a desire to counter the influences affecting him. Alexander Franco is an alumnus of Cornell and a patent lawyer, while Diana Franco is a senior product manager.
However, Austin Franco rejected his parents' explanation, asserting that his views stem from both online exposure and "in-person experiences." He compared the internet's influence to that of newspapers in previous generations, suggesting it is a natural extension of communication.
Despite his parents' actions, Cornell University has stated that Franco will be permitted to return to campus. University President Michael Kotlikoff acknowledged the abhorrent nature of Franco's statements but emphasized the university's obligation to defend freedom of speech. Franco himself stated that he does not regret his actions and believes individuals have the right to express their views, drawing a parallel to protected speech in employment.
Franco's public statements originated in June when he declined a job interview with the startup VryfID, citing antisemitic reasons to the company's Jewish co-founders. He has since created a GiveSendGo campaign, which has reportedly raised over $7,000, in addition to other fundraising efforts that have gathered approximately $25,000. Franco has indicated he plans to move to an apartment near Cornell's campus in Ithaca, New York. He also appeared on "Piers Morgan Uncensored," where the host criticized his stance. Franco has expressed aspirations to enter politics after graduation.
