Cornell Accuser Texted Accused Fraternity Brother About Rumors, Expressed Friendship

Newly released text messages indicate that a Cornell University student, identified as Jane Doe, who has accused seven fraternity brothers of gang-raping her, communicated with one of the accused men about identifying individuals spreading rumors about the encounter. The messages, published by TMZ and reported by the Daily Mail, also reveal Doe expressing a continued sense of friendship with Matthew Ingalls, one of the seven men named in her civil lawsuit.

Doe filed a civil lawsuit last month alleging she was drugged and sexually assaulted by seven members of the Chi Phi fraternity in October 2024 after a party. The accused men have denied the allegations, stating that any sexual activity with Doe was consensual. None of the men have been charged.

In texts exchanged days after the alleged assault, Doe expressed concern to Ingalls about her reputation on campus, suggesting that gossip was being spread by others who were 'jealous.' Ingalls attempted to help identify the source of the rumors and offered reassurance, telling Doe, 'I'm so sorry (Jane's real name) ik this sucks a lot but I think (hopefully very soon) these idiots will move on and it'll be done with.' He also consoled her about suffering from a urinary tract infection (UTI) following the encounter.

Doe responded to Ingalls with a message that included, 'you're right it'll get better and u think everyone's j jealous of us.. but also like everyone needs to grow up cause sexuality and sex and s**t is changing and stuff like this is going to become more common,, i'm also really open minded tho. i luv u king...'

Doe's lawsuit alleges that she went to the Chi Phi fraternity house to meet Ingalls and agreed to a threesome with him and another man. She claims she was then incapacitated by ketamine and alcohol before other men joined, leading to a seven-hour encounter. The lawsuit states that fraternity members sent messages in a Snapchat group chat during this time, including phrases like 'free p***y' and 'Shop still open?', with one message allegedly accompanied by a photograph of Doe. Ingalls, Jonathan Newell, Winston Lee, Gillio Lopes, Diego Sarabia, Scott Norris, and Scott Kretzschmar are named in the suit.

In the immediate aftermath of the alleged assault, Ingalls sent texts to Doe reassuring her that rumors were 'nonsense' and that 'boring people' were responsible. He also asked how she was coping and if she needed anything. Doe replied that she was angry about the gossip and felt some individuals were spreading false information, stating, 'I feel like I know who some of the rats in the room were, if I ever find out I swear to god it's in sight.' She also mentioned her UTI and feeling distressed.

In separate messages, Jonathan Newell, also named in the lawsuit, texted Doe expressing regret for 'how things went down the other night.' Newell stated his memory was 'fuzzy' but that he and Ingalls felt regret for not intervening sooner. Doe responded to Newell that her memories were also 'super clouded' due to alcohol and drugs, adding, 'At the end of the day none of the sexual stuff was illegal, and honestly i really liked being w u and matt.' She concluded, 'So anything anyone has to say about the gangbang is out of their jurisdiction. I don't think we should feel any shame for the part. our body our choice asf.'

However, Doe's communication with Ingalls later shifted, with her stating, 'Jonathan def told people.' Ingalls denied this, and Doe responded, 'I'm j dropping it i give up im defeated.' After learning she was uninvited from a party, Doe expressed that women often face disadvantages and accused the fraternity members of covering their tracks.

On November 7, 2024, Ingalls reached out to Doe again, mentioning he was being labeled an assaulter and asking if she had spoken to anyone. Doe denied telling anyone but acknowledged that the narrative was being changed and that rumors of her being 'gang banged' existed. Two days later, Doe informed Ingalls that she was done talking to him, stating, 'I know you lied.'
