A veteran police officer became visibly emotional on the stand Thursday, recounting the harrowing scene he encountered upon arriving at the Duxbury, Massachusetts, home of Lindsay Clancy, where her three young children were found strangled. Police Officer Stephen Hall, an 11-year veteran of the force, paused his testimony, his voice breaking as he described the condition of the children and the pleas of their father, Patrick Clancy.

Hall testified that he heard a scream from inside the residence and, along with his partner, Officer Brian Josephine, proceeded to the basement. There, they found Patrick Clancy in distress, exclaiming, “I can’t wake them up!” Hall then observed the couple’s 3-year-old son, Dawson, lying lifeless on the floor, discolored with a “blueish, purple” hue.

Josephine described the children as having gray skin, bloodshot eyes, and visible marks on their necks consistent with strangulation by exercise bands. He noted that upon seeing Dawson, he immediately recognized the gravity of the situation. After bringing Dawson outside to be attended by paramedics, Josephine returned to the house to find Cora, 5, and 8-month-old Callan also motionless on the floor. "She killed the f--king kids!" Josephine recalled Patrick Clancy yelling.

Lindsay Clancy, a 35-year-old former nurse, is accused of strangling her children with exercise bands on the evening of January 24, 2023. She subsequently ingested medication, inflicted wounds on herself, and attempted suicide by jumping from a second-story window, which left her paralyzed.

During the trial, Clancy’s defense attorney is expected to argue for a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity, contending that her actions were the result of severe postpartum psychosis exacerbated by prescribed medications.

Prosecutors have called nine first responders to testify about the scene discovered shortly after 6 p.m. on January 24, 2023. Witnesses described Clancy being found in the backyard, moaning and intermittently losing consciousness, with apparent cuts on her wrists and neck. Meanwhile, paramedics, firefighters, and police made unsuccessful attempts to revive the children before they were pronounced dead at a hospital.

Duxbury Fire Department Capt. PJ Hussey characterized the situation as rapidly chaotic, requiring additional ambulances due to the number of individuals needing medical attention. Paramedic Jennifer Stratton testified to finding deep strangulation marks around the neck of the infant, Callan.

Clancy, who attends court in a wheelchair, has also filed a lawsuit against her doctors, alleging they failed to properly diagnose her and overprescribed medication. Her husband, Patrick Clancy, who has since remarried, has made similar claims. He testified that from September 2022, when his wife began experiencing postpartum depression, until the time of the killings, she had seen five doctors and was prescribed 15 different medications. At the time of the alleged murders, Clancy was reportedly taking six drugs and had been hospitalized twice for suicidal thoughts.

The trial is scheduled to continue, with the jury expected to visit the home where the alleged slayings occurred.
