A convicted sex offender has been arrested and charged in the murder of Robin Doyle, 56, a beloved gas station clerk who disappeared from her Hickory, North Carolina home on July 28. Doyle was found dead in the woods days after her home was discovered with the rear door ajar.

Authorities identified Leroy Loper, 54, as a person of interest after Flock camera technology captured a vehicle near Doyle's residence around the time of her disappearance. Loper, a former coworker of Doyle's, was taken into custody on July 29 for unrelated sex offender registry violations concerning his social media activity. Investigators also searched Loper's home in Surry County, where they reported finding items including zip ties similar to those found near Doyle's home, along with duct tape.

Loper's cellphone data led investigators to a wooded area in Catawba County, where Doyle's body was discovered on Friday. He is now facing charges of felony murder, first-degree kidnapping, and concealment of death. A judge denied Loper bond on Monday, and he remains in custody at the Catawba County jail.

Loper has a prior record, including convictions for first-degree kidnapping and second-degree forcible sexual abuse. Rock Hill Sheriff Don Brown stated that the investigation is active and authorities are committed to pursuing all facts to ensure justice for Doyle's family.

Community members remembered Doyle for her friendly demeanor and kindness. Corban Worley, a regular customer, placed a tribute on the gas station's marquee, reading, "Robin, the world wasn't ready for you to leave, but Heaven needed you home." Crystal Killian Morgan, who trained Doyle at Propst Superette, described her as "such a kind-hearted person with a gentle soul" who "loved her job and her customers."
