Convicted Murderer Arrested for Fatal Bridgeport Road Rage Shooting
Jorge Ortiz, who was previously convicted of felony murder, faces charges including murder and weapons offenses for the death of Nelson Batista.
Jorge Ortiz, 57, a man with a prior felony murder conviction, has been arrested and charged in connection with the fatal road rage shooting of Nelson Batista, 48, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Police apprehended Ortiz on Monday following a week-long manhunt, charging him with murder, criminal possession of a pistol, and carrying a pistol without a permit.
Ortiz is accused of fatally shooting Batista on October 12 during a dispute that began as a road rage incident. According to Bridgeport Police Chief Roderick Porter, Ortiz and Batista were strangers and the encounter was a random act. Surveillance video captured a man identified as Ortiz following a woman's vehicle. Batista, driving an SUV, turned down a side street, with Ortiz allegedly following. The video shows Ortiz slapping the side of Batista's car, prompting Batista to stop and exit his vehicle.
An affidavit details that Ortiz allegedly punched Batista, leading to a scuffle on the ground. During the altercation, surveillance footage shows the two struggling for control of a handgun. The city's ShotSpotter system detected at least two gunshots. The medical examiner determined that Batista sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the chest. He later died at the hospital.
Police identified Ortiz as a suspect after receiving tips from the community, including cellphone video of the incident and witness accounts that helped in his identification. Another witness reportedly identified Ortiz from a photograph.
Court records indicate that Ortiz was sentenced to 30 years in prison in 1992 for a felony murder conviction. At the time of Batista's death, Ortiz was no longer on parole.
Batista, a grandfather of three and father of six, had recently buried his son, a 25-year-old Air Force airman, whose funeral was held on October 3 in Louisiana. Batista was an avid fan of Major League Baseball and the NFL, particularly the New York Yankees.
