Daniel Thomas, 37, a convicted kidnapper and founder of the Patriot Platform, has emerged as a central figure in recent anti-migrant protests in the UK, notably those involving balaclava-clad demonstrators in Dover and Portsmouth. Thomas, who served time in prison for a 2016 kidnapping incident, now leads a movement he describes as comprised of "working class men" who are "bricklayers, roofers and carpenters." However, reports indicate Thomas himself comes from a solidly middle-class background, having attended a private school in Hampshire. His father, Russell Thomas, was a university-educated man who retired to Brittany and tragically died by suicide in 2022 at age 60. Thomas's siblings, including Jack, Victoria, and Charlie, appear to have pursued different paths, working in aviation, yoga and osteopathy, and business consulting, respectively.
Thomas, who previously served as a bodyguard for far-right figure Tommy Robinson, presents his movement as non-violent, despite the intimidating appearance of his protesters and instances of property damage and injuries to police officers during recent demonstrations. He claims the balaclavas are worn to protect protesters from being targeted by "the left." Thomas himself has a military background, having served as a tank driver before being discharged on medical grounds. After his release from prison, he adopted the online pseudonym 'Danny Tommo' and organized marches advocating for Tommy Robinson's release.
In a recent incident, Thomas disrupted a press conference held by Reform UK's home affairs spokesman, Zia Yusuf, expressing dissatisfaction with Nigel Farage's condemnation of the protests as "disgusting." Thomas stated that the Patriot Platform was created not due to violence but to defend Britain's borders. He warned that if politicians like Farage continue to criticize his movement, his followers might be pushed towards supporting other political parties. Thomas indicated his followers could eventually form a voting bloc.
Despite his claims of upholding Christian values in his roofing company, RMT Roofing Specialists Ltd, Thomas's public activities and past criminal record raise questions about the nature and future of his movement. His mother, Alison Thomas, has publicly distanced herself from her son's activities, stating, "He doesn't live here. This is my house. I don't want anyone coming round here. I have nothing to do with it."
The recent protests, which included blocking roads and disrupting travel, have presented authorities and politicians with a growing challenge in addressing the rise of organized anti-migrant street politics led by figures like Daniel Thomas.
