Constable Mia Lay Dies in High-Speed Patrol Car Crash
A 20-year-old officer was killed when the patrol car she was a passenger in crashed into a tree at over 150 km/h, just meters from a police station in Sydney.
Constable Mia Lay, 20, died instantly when the police patrol car she was travelling in struck a tree in Redfern, Sydney, early Friday morning. The vehicle, driven by 24-year-old Constable Brandon Torrisi, was reportedly traveling at more than 150 kilometers per hour in response to an urgent report of a stolen car.
Constable Torrisi sustained minor injuries in the crash, which occurred approximately 100 meters from the Redfern Police Station, and was released from the hospital later that day. Investigators are examining the circumstances of the collision, including the possibility of charges against Constable Torrisi if excessive speed is found to be a factor. He had not yet been interviewed by investigators.
CCTV footage captured the scene following the crash, showing Constable Torrisi exiting the damaged Volkswagen Tiguan. Police sources indicated that Constable Torrisi's mental state is severely impacted by the incident. The investigation will also scrutinize the patrol car for any mechanical defects.
The NSW Police watchdog, the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission, stated it would monitor the internal investigation by NSW Police to maintain public confidence, but would not conduct its own independent inquiry until criminal or coronial proceedings have concluded.
Constable Lay had been a member of the police force for 16 months and was described by NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon as an officer who had shown exceptional promise and was well-loved. Police Minister Yasmine Catley relayed that Constable Lay's colleagues referred to her as an 'angel' and that her parents spoke of her passion for her job and pride in being a New South Wales Police officer.
Constable Lay's family and her partner, Daniel Vasquez, a fellow officer, visited the crash site on Saturday. Mr. Vasquez remembered her as the 'happiest girl' and the 'love of my life,' emphasizing her dedication to her work and her positive impact on the community.
