Conservative radio host Erick Erickson has commended Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff of Georgia for his constituent services, noting that Ossoff is accessible to diverse groups within the state. In an interview on "Politically Georgia," Erickson stated that farmers in South Georgia and even Republicans in the heavily conservative Houston County can reach Ossoff or his staff for assistance, regardless of their political affiliation.
Erickson contrasted Ossoff's approach with that of his Republican opponent, Rep. Mike Collins, suggesting that Collins' campaign strategy is overly reliant on loyalty to former President Donald Trump. According to Erickson, Collins has "run the entire race as MAGA" and remains closely aligned with Trump in his advertising, failing to appeal to suburban voters who might be looking for a different message. Erickson expressed difficulty in identifying Collins' specific policy platform beyond his allegiance to Trump, suggesting this is not what suburban voters desire.
Recent polling indicates Ossoff has a lead over Collins. A poll by Larry Sabato's Crystal Ball showed Ossoff ahead by 9 points, while an AARP poll from last month found 52% of surveyed voters prefer Ossoff to Collins.
Despite acknowledging that Ossoff can sometimes appear "stiff" or "robotic," Erickson emphasized his effectiveness in securing help for constituents. Erickson also noted, based on behind-the-scenes information, that some grumbling exists within the Democratic party, with Senator Raphael Warnock reportedly feeling that Ossoff takes credit for initiatives Warnock has implemented. However, Erickson conceded that this approach appears to be effective for Ossoff on the campaign trail.
Trump publicly endorsed Collins ahead of the June primary, calling him a "true Friend, Fighter, and WARRIOR, who has been with us from the very beginning" on Truth Social. Erickson's remarks highlight a potential strategic challenge for the Republican campaign in Georgia, where aligning too closely with Trump might alienate crucial voting blocs.
