Conservative figures, including Fox News host Jesse Watters and Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, have strongly criticized New York City official Zohran Mamdani's request for residents to limit air conditioning use during a severe heatwave, drawing comparisons to communism and socialism.
Mamdani urged New Yorkers on Tuesday to set their thermostats to 78 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent the power grid from becoming overloaded. This advisory comes as the city braces for a potentially record-breaking hot Fourth of July holiday weekend, with temperatures forecast to exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit, marking the hottest in two decades.
Watters, broadcasting from the Great American State Fair in Washington, D.C., compared Mamdani's suggestion to China's former one-child policy. "First they tell you how cold to keep your room," Watters stated. "And then they can tell you how much sex you can have. It’s a slippery slope; they’re gonna say one-child policy next. This is how communism starts; they start rationing things."
Ramaswamy echoed similar sentiments on social media, writing, "This is what socialism looks like, folks. The right answer isn’t restrictions or mandates. It’s drilling, fracking, coal, & nuclear. That’s how we’ll roll in Ohio."
Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) also weighed in, posting on X, "First AOC tried to come for your steak and ribs and now the Socialist Democrats are coming for your AC. This is the future that WOKE Democrats want not just for NYC but for South Carolina too!"
Despite the outcry, Mamdani's request was not a legally binding mandate. Similar advisories have been issued by other states and municipalities during extreme weather events. For instance, the Public Utility Commission of Texas has implemented directives comparable to Mamdani's during high-temperature periods in the state.
