Connor Hellebuyck Trade Boosts Devils' Playoff Chances, Betting Markets React
The acquisition of goaltender Connor Hellebuyck from the Winnipeg Jets has significantly improved the New Jersey Devils' postseason outlook, according to betting platforms.
The New Jersey Devils have seen their odds of making the playoffs surge following the acquisition of goaltender Connor Hellebuyck from the Winnipeg Jets. Betting markets on Kalshi indicate an increase in their playoff probability from 55 percent to 70 percent, a 15 percentage point jump.
DraftKings Sportsbook has adjusted its odds, listing the Devils at -400 to make the postseason, implying an 80 percent probability. While their chances of reaching the playoffs have improved, their odds for winning the Stanley Cup saw a more modest rise, moving from 3 to 5 percent on Kalshi and from 15/1 to 14/1 on DraftKings.
The Devils, currently holding the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference with a 6-4-0 record, traded forwards Dawson Mercer and Nick Bjugstad, goaltender Nico Daws, prospect Alexander Command, and two draft picks to secure the veteran netminder.
Goaltending Inconsistencies Addressed
Since the departure of Martin Brodeur in 2014, the Devils have struggled with goaltending stability. Despite allowing the third-fewest expected goals per game in the NHL, the team ranks 24th in team save percentage. Data from MoneyPuck shows that Nico Daws has allowed 2.3 goals more than expected, placing him 53rd among all goaltenders, while Jake Allen has performed worse, giving up 3.7 goals above expected.
Hellebuyck, a former Vezina Trophy winner, has consistently been among the league's elite in goals saved above expected, leading the NHL in this category in four of the past seven seasons. His arrival aims to address the Devils' ongoing goaltending challenges.
Hellebuyck's Career and Reunion
Hellebuyck captured the Hart Trophy and his third Vezina Trophy in the 2024-25 season before what was described as a disappointing final season in Winnipeg. His move to New Jersey reunites him with forward Jack Hughes, a former teammate on Team USA during the Winter Olympics, where Hellebuyck's performance helped secure a gold medal.
The Devils have made the playoffs twice in Jack Hughes' eight-year career and have not reached the Stanley Cup Final since 2012. The addition of Hellebuyck is seen as a significant move to bolster their postseason aspirations.
