Connor Hellebuyck Suspended by Jets Amid Trade Demand

Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck has been suspended by the team for failing to report to training camp, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing trade drama between the player and the NHL club.

The suspension was announced Wednesday, with the team expected to address the situation further on Thursday when General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff meets with reporters.

Hellebuyck publicly requested a trade from Winnipeg earlier this summer through a statement released by his agent, Ray Petkau. The statement indicated that Hellebuyck had attempted to resolve the matter privately and respectfully, giving the organization time to explore its options.

"With training camp approaching, I felt it was important to publicly confirm my request," the August statement read. "My position has not changed, and I believe moving on is the best path forward for me and my family. I appreciate everything Winnipeg Jets fans have meant to me throughout my career and hope a resolution can be reached soon."

The 33-year-old American netminder is entering the third year of a seven-year contract extension. His absence from training camp means he will not be with the team as they prepare for the upcoming season.

Hellebuyck had previously expressed dissatisfaction with the organization's direction at the end of last season, questioning the team's ability to build a championship contender and expressing his own desire to win a Stanley Cup. "For me, it’s winning a Stanley Cup. That’s my goal, and that’s all I have left," Hellebuyck stated in April, according to The Athletic. "I don’t play this game for the money, I don’t play it for the fame. I do it for my own personal fun, and part of that is winning a Cup."

If Hellebuyck remains suspended when the regular season begins, his salary will not count against the team's salary cap.
