Conley Denounces Mamdani's Remarks After Debate Confrontation
Democratic candidate Cait Conley finally condemned Mayor Zohran Mamdani's Oct. 7 statement on Israel after being pressed by Republican Rep. Mike Lawler during their final debate.
Democratic congressional hopeful Cait Conley announced her condemnation of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s Oct. 7 statement regarding Israel, succumbing to pressure from Republican incumbent Rep. Mike Lawler during their final debate on Wednesday. Conley’s admission came after Lawler repeatedly challenged her to denounce Mamdani's rhetoric, which Lawler characterized as antisemitic.
“Yes, I do denounce Mamdani’s statement on Oct. 7th,” Conley stated during the debate. “I condemn antisemitism from any party or anyone.”
Lawler had accused Conley of dodging the question during their previous debate on September 28, citing her refusal to condemn Mamdani's stances on Israel. He brought up Mamdani's Oct. 7 statement, which acknowledged the Hamas attack anniversary but primarily focused on criticizing the Israeli government's actions in Gaza. "Last debate, Cait was given four opportunities to condemn Zohran Mamdani’s antisemitism and she refused each time only for him to issue the most vile antisemitic statement on Oct. 7,” Lawler said.
In their September encounter, Conley had deflected Lawler's inquiries by asking if he would denounce Donald Trump for his impact on families in the Hudson Valley.
Lawler responded to Conley’s eventual denouncement by stating, “Great. It shouldn’t have taken you until today to denounce it.”
The district, New York's 17th, has a significant Jewish population, making the conflict in Israel and Gaza a prominent issue on the campaign trail. Lawler has expressed strong support for Israel, calling it “our greatest ally in the world” and vowing to oppose any efforts to defund the U.S.-Israel strategic partnership.
Conley, an Army veteran, has also voiced support for Israel, affirming its right to exist and its importance to American national security. However, she also stated that she would criticize the Netanyahu administration when she believes its actions are detrimental. She indicated after the debate that she opposes West Bank settlements, criticizes Israel's operations in southern Lebanon, and believes Israel must pursue a two-state solution.
Recent polls show the race between Lawler and Conley to be closely contested, with Conley holding a slight lead of approximately two points, just under three weeks before the Nov. 3 election. Lawler previously won the district by less than one percent in 2022. The 17th Congressional District, stretching across the lower Hudson Valley, is considered a swing district that could influence the balance of power in Washington.
