Congressional Candidate Sparks Controversy Over Remarks on Illegal Immigrant's Criminal Record
Darializa Avila Chevalier's comments on Oscar Belgal, who was shot by ICE, draw criticism from officials and residents.
Congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier has ignited controversy with her statements regarding Oscar Belgal, an illegal immigrant who was shot by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. Chevalier stated that Belgal's violent criminal record "doesn't matter" and expressed a desire for him to be free to move among the community.
Belgal was shot by federal officers last week while they were attempting to arrest him. He is accused of driving his vehicle at the agents during the encounter. Authorities were pursuing his arrest not only for being in the country illegally but also in connection with alleged past criminal activities. According to reports, Belgal has had multiple run-ins with law enforcement, was previously convicted of armed robbery, and is suspected of drug trafficking. Neighbors have also reported that he had terrorized them, allegedly with a machete.
Chevalier's remarks have drawn criticism from some residents who believe Belgal's criminal history is significant. "Immigration is just doing its job," one resident told The Post. "They go after those who have committed crimes."
Governor Kathy Hochul also expressed outrage over the shooting and detention of Belgal, calling for a halt to ICE enforcement operations in New York. Mayor Zohran Mamdani also defended Belgal, referring to him as a "New Yorker."
Chevalier, a candidate for Congress, has been vocal about immigration issues and has participated in protests, including one near the scene of the October 8, 2026, incident in the Bronx where federal agents shot Belgal.
