A mass shooting at a July 4th family cookout in Coney Island left eight people injured, including four children, prompting a police investigation into a possible connection with a gang-related homicide that occurred earlier in the week on the same block.
The gunman, described as wearing black clothing and a black ski mask, approached a gathering outside a building on West 30th Street and Surf Avenue shortly after 10:30 p.m. Saturday and fired at least 10 shots before fleeing. Authorities recovered a Tec-9 style firearm with an extended magazine and 10 shell casings from the scene.
The youngest victims included a 6-year-old boy shot in the stomach, and 7-year-old, 12-year-old, and 14-year-old boys shot in the legs. All child victims are expected to survive. Among the other injured were a 37-year-old man shot in the shoulder, a 33-year-old man shot in the chest, a 25-year-old woman shot in the leg, and a 21-year-old woman shot in the chest who is in critical condition.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that there was no indication of an argument or altercation at the barbecue prior to the shooting. "Earlier this week, we had a confirmed gang-related homicide that occurred on the same block," Tisch said. "We are looking into whether there is a nexus between the two incidents."
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with people falling to the ground and scrambling for safety. Some initially mistook the gunfire for fireworks due to the holiday. "I’m thinking they’re fireworks, because, of course, it’s the 4th of July," said Coney Island local Erica Borrelli. "My son is 10 years old. He ran over to me and he was like, ‘Mom, those are gunshots.’"
One victim's mother, Tiffany Williams, whose 21-year-old daughter was critically injured, expressed anguish over the violence. "They just didn’t care," Williams said of the perpetrators. "They aimed for babies."
Residents in the area have reported ongoing issues with vandalism and disruptive behavior in the vicinity of the building where the shooting occurred. The investigation is ongoing.
