Concerns Rise Over Blepharoplasty Procedures Performed Abroad

Dozens of women are reporting severe complications from blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, sought at clinics abroad due to lower costs compared to procedures in the United Kingdom. Surgeons in the UK have treated patients who experienced issues such as open wounds, infections, and an inability to close their eyes properly after undergoing these surgeries in mainland Europe, Africa, and Asia. The lack of adequate aftercare in some of these overseas clinics places an additional burden on the UK's National Health Service (NHS).

One patient, Nikita from Dublin, pursued upper eyelid surgery after being quoted over €4,000 in Ireland. She found a Dutch company, Faceland, offering the procedure for €750 in Düsseldorf. Nikita described the clinic environment as a "conveyor belt," with a constant flow of patients. Faceland states it has performed over 2,950 blepharoplasty procedures on UK patients across its clinics in the Netherlands, Germany, and Switzerland since October 2024. The company asserts it provides "safe and quality" treatments, claiming fewer than 1% of procedures result in a complaint, though this figure may not encompass all revision surgeries.

Nikita, who had her surgery in November 2025, initially believed the procedure was as minor as lip fillers or Botox. However, she experienced intense pain during the surgery, even feeling the needle during stitching. She described the experience as "horrible."

Social media platforms have seen a surge in blepharoplasty-related content, with videos posted by UK accounts viewed nearly 150 million times in the past three years, a fivefold increase from the preceding three years. While many posts highlight positive outcomes, a significant number of patients have encountered problems.

Laura, another patient who underwent a procedure at Faceland's Amsterdam clinic, experienced her wounds reopening eight days after surgery. She reported difficulty getting through Faceland's emergency helpline and had to seek emergency care at A&E multiple times. The exposed wounds became infected, and she described being in "constant agony" and afraid to sleep. Laura fears she will be left with permanent scars.

Another patient, Caryn, contacted Faceland twice about complications but received a delayed and minimal response. She continues to experience blurry vision and scarring in her left eye nearly two years later. Faceland maintains it provided support and follow-up, but apologized if patients felt unsupported or experienced complications.

UK surgeons emphasize that proper aftercare for blepharoplasty should be available 24/7. The logistical challenges of accessing immediate care when a surgeon is located internationally can be insurmountable for patients. Experts warn that lower costs for cosmetic procedures may correlate with lower standards of care. Patients are advised that removing their own stitches, a practice some have resorted to after treatment abroad, is considered "a recipe for disaster" by medical professionals due to the increased risk of infection and wound splitting.

While Nikita is largely satisfied with her results apart from a minor scar, she urges others to understand the full risks involved. She suggests that if she had the funds or had not been influenced by social media trends, she might have chosen a provider closer to home and approached the decision with more caution.
