Commuter Killed After Backpack Catches on Subway Doors, Falls to Tracks
A 57-year-old man died on Monday evening when his backpack became ensnared in the closing doors of a New York City subway car, causing him to fall onto the tracks.
A New York City commuter died Monday evening when the closing doors of a northbound A-train trapped his backpack, causing him to fall onto the subway tracks. The train then struck the man, identified as 57-year-old Yaw Boahene, as it pulled away from the Utica Avenue station.
First responders arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, which occurred around 5:48 p.m. during rush hour. Boahene was found unconscious and unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene. The New York Police Department stated that foul play is not suspected and that the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
This incident marks the latest fatality on the city's subway system. Earlier in September, two young adults were killed after sitting on the subway tracks at the Canal Street station. In June, a 47-year-old nurse was pushed into an oncoming train in the Bronx.
The Daily Mail contacted the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the Mayor's office for comment.
