Community Rallies Around 81-Year-Old Man Delivering Lost Luggage to Fund Wife's Cancer Care
An outpouring of support has emerged for a Texas man working strenuous jobs to cover his wife's medical bills.
An 81-year-old man has become the focus of community support after it was revealed he works delivering lost luggage to fund his wife's cancer treatment.
Donald Johnson, of The Colony, Texas, has been delivering lost luggage for the past three years, accumulating 200,000 miles on his car, which he says is no longer reliable. He described his situation to a neighbor, Erin Howell, stating, "It's the only job that will hire me."
Howell witnessed Johnson painstakingly carrying heavy luggage up a steep flight of stairs and was moved to create a GoFundMe page to assist the couple. "The other day, I looked out door cam and saw an 81-year-old man slowly and painstakingly carrying my heavy luggage that had been lost on a recent flight up a steep flight of stairs," Howell wrote. "He looked absolutely exhausted, and his steps were heavy with effort."
Howell explained that Johnson's wife of 57 years, Josephine, is battling cancer, and the couple has been overwhelmed by medical bills, continuous treatments, expensive prescription medications, and daily living costs. "At an age when he should be resting and spending every precious single moment by his wife's side, he is out on the road lifting heavy bags just to keep her alive and cared for."
She described Johnson as a "deeply proud, selfless, and dedicated husband" and urged the community to help. "He shouldn't have to carry this crushing financial and physical weight all by himself anymore," Howell stated.
The GoFundMe page, which aimed to raise $150,000, has so far garnered approximately $125,000. Johnson has expressed gratitude for the community's response, telling Fox4 News, "I think I'm going to be able to stop working, and that's amazing. So we're not quite totally over the hump yet, but we're getting there very quickly."
Josephine Johnson also shared her appreciation for the support, saying, "I can face it. I think that's the big difference. Some have made comments and they're praying for us. And it's just, it's a joyful feeling."
