Dozens of pink and purple balloons were released in Grangetown, Middlesbrough, as a community mourned the loss of seven-year-old Valentina Foster, who died in a house fire on Wednesday. Valentina and her aunt, Natalie McDonald, were killed when the home was set alight. A 23-year-old man, Jaden Wright, has been arrested in connection with the incident, facing separate charges of grievous bodily harm and intentional strangulation.
Family members had requested attendees bring pink balloons, Valentina's favorite color, to give her what they described as 'the best send off she deserves.' Footage from the event shows pink smoke being released into the air as spectators watched on, with some filming the tribute on their smartphones.
Four other individuals were injured in the blaze: a 48-year-old woman who remains in critical but stable condition, a 27-year-old man receiving hospital treatment, and two teenage girls who were treated for non-life-threatening injuries and have since been discharged.
The fire is not being linked to a fatal collision on the A66 that claimed seven lives, including two police officers. However, authorities initially could not rule out a connection to wider gang violence that emerged in the area following the crash.
In a separate but related crackdown on organized crime, three men have been arrested. A 19-year-old and a 24-year-old were detained on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence following an incident where a vehicle was rammed into another. Additionally, an 18-year-old man was charged with dangerous driving after being observed driving erratically.
Assistant Chief Constable Wayne Fox stated that the arrests demonstrate the police force's commitment to pursuing those involved in serious and organized crime, vowing to dismantle criminal gangs operating in the community. These recent arrests bring the total number of individuals detained since August 22, 2026, to 27. The police are continuing their investigation around the clock and are appealing to the public for information.
