Martin Withers, affectionately nicknamed 'Minion Man' for his past work decorating bollards to resemble the popular animated characters, has taken it upon himself to beautify his local estate. Withers decided to take action after noticing an increase in profanity scrawled across street cabinets.
"Instead of swear words everywhere, it's a lot better," Withers said. "I like to give the kids something, so I've been trying to think of popular characters for children." He expressed that the painted bollards and cabinets offer a more positive visual for residents, especially children.
The green street cabinets he has been painting belong to BT Openreach. A spokesperson for the communications company acknowledged the positive impact of Withers' efforts, stating, "Our street cabinets already play an important role in keeping local communities connected – so it's always great to see them being used to bring people together in other ways like this."
Withers' initiative has been met with appreciation from the community, who see his art as a welcome alternative to vandalism. His work aims to foster a sense of pride and enjoyment in the neighborhood, transforming neglected public spaces into colorful attractions.
