Organizers of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games are distributing free tickets to members of the "Tartan Army," the collective term for Scotland's football supporters. The move is intended as a gesture of appreciation for fans who traveled to the United States to support the Scottish national team during the recent World Cup.

Commonwealth Games officials have emphasized that the ticket giveaway is not a reflection of poor sales, pointing to "phenomenal demand across all sports" and "hundreds of thousands of tickets sold." While specific sales figures have not been released, the organizers highlighted the positive reception and enthusiasm shown by fans.

The "Tartan Army" received an email offering up to four complimentary tickets for various events and sports within the Games. This initiative aims to replicate the passion and support demonstrated by these fans during the World Cup.

Specific events included in the ticket offer are Para Powerlifting on July 24, which will award the first medals of the Games, and 3x3 basketball featuring Scotland against Australia on the same day. Members can also apply for tickets to boxing matches, including the men's light-heavyweight division on July 25. Additionally, free tickets are available for an athletics morning session on July 27, featuring the first rounds of the men's and women's 100m sprints, and for weightlifting and netball events on July 29.

The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games are scheduled to run from July 23 to August 2. The event is a scaled-down version of the Games, with Glasgow stepping in to host after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew due to escalating costs.

Phil Batty, chief executive of Glasgow 2026, stated that the "Tartan Army" had "captured the hearts of so many at the World Cup." He added, "The incredible support shown for the national team is exactly the groundswell of energy we want behind Team Scotland as they prepare to compete on home soil at the Commonwealth Games. This ticketing initiative is a thank you to those fans."

The opening ceremony on July 23 will feature Scottish singer-songwriter KT Tunstall, alongside Callum Beattie, Nathan Evans, and the duo Saint PHNX, with an additional 600 volunteer performers. Tickets for the opening ceremony remain available for purchase.
