The Washington Commanders are considering a significant alteration to their permanent uniforms, with plans to change their helmet logo to include a spear design reminiscent of the club's 1960s Washington Redskins era. While not officially termed a "Redskins spear," the move represents a step toward acknowledging the franchise's past.

The team abandoned the Redskins nickname and associated logos in 2020, a decision driven by calls to move away from Native American imagery that was deemed politically incorrect. The potential reintroduction of the spear, which was part of the Redskins' helmet design from 1965 to 1969, comes as the franchise navigates its identity under new ownership.

Team owner Josh Harris has previously expressed a fondness for the spear emblem, stating in London that it "brings everything together," referencing special forces, Native Americans, and Roman gladiators. He also wore a cap featuring the spear piercing the team's 'W' logo during a fan rally.

This potential uniform change was first reported by uniform and design expert Zach Cohen and confirmed by an NFL source. The spear design was previously featured as part of the Commanders' alternate uniform in 2026. The team's current ownership, led by Harris who purchased the franchise in July 2023 for $6.05 billion, is permitted to make changes to primary uniforms and logos within the first five years of new ownership.

The reported new design is expected to feature the spear piercing the 'W' logo, symbolizing Washington, though it is not anticipated to include the feather that was part of the original 1960s Redskins helmet design. The franchise has stated that the team will not revert to the Redskins nickname. However, Harris has indicated a desire to "embrace the past as much as we can in a respectful way."
