Commanders Coach Denies Players Ignored Jayden Daniels' Injury
Coach Dan Quinn stated that Washington Commanders players were deeply concerned about quarterback Jayden Daniels following his elbow injury, contrary to a viral narrative.
Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn has refuted claims that his players disregarded quarterback Jayden Daniels' elbow injury during a recent game. A viral video circulating on social media appeared to show teammates walking away from Daniels as he lay on the turf in pain after dislocating his elbow.
However, Quinn asserted that the opposite was true. "These guys were absolutely gutted," Quinn said Wednesday. "They love this guy, and so halftime was hard. It was emotional in that space."
The perception of the players' reaction was amplified by the timing of the injury, which occurred on the final play before halftime. Quinn explained that referees indicated the team could not delay the start of halftime. He added that many players did, in fact, come onto the field as trainers attended to Daniels and that some returned from the locker room to show their support.
Backup quarterback Marcus Mariota was among those who went onto the field, and he is now set to take over as the starter while Daniels' injury is evaluated. "It's bull—- what people are saying," offensive tackle Brandon Coleman told reporters. "Jay’s our guy and he’s been our guy. There’s no malice behind it."
Players expressed frustration with the social media narrative, emphasizing that a brief video clip did not accurately reflect the team's concern. "We all care for our quarterback," offensive lineman Josh Conerly said. "You can’t go off a simple 10-second clip."
Quinn also voiced confidence in Mariota's ability to lead the offense. "I think the nice part with Marcus, man, he does have a real command on things that we need," Quinn said. "There's a specific way, like in each game, that you have to go about it and what it takes to win. We hit that with the team today. But with Marcus, he's one that's really in control, has good vision of it, what it is, where to go. You can hear that type of communication with him. So I think, number one, him running the system gives everybody a calmness about them knowing that he’ll take care of it."
The Commanders are currently facing decisions regarding Daniels' injury, which could potentially require season-ending surgery. The situation presents a significant challenge for the team as they navigate the remainder of their season with Mariota under center.
