Commanders Coach Denies Ignorance of Down After Daniels' Fourth-Down Throwaway
Coach Dan Quinn stated he knew it was fourth down despite sideline lip-reading suggesting otherwise following Jayden Daniels' decision to throw the ball away.
Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn maintained that he was aware it was fourth down during a critical second-quarter play, despite lip-reading analysis of sideline footage suggesting he was surprised by the down situation. The incident occurred during the Commanders' 23-17 road loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night.
On a fourth-and-2 play from the 49ers' 13-yard line, quarterback Jayden Daniels threw the ball away, a decision that resulted in a turnover on downs. After the play, footage appeared to show Quinn reacting with surprise, with some lip readers interpreting his words as "Oh, that was fourth down." However, Quinn explicitly denied this interpretation postgame.
"I definitely knew it was fourth down," Quinn told reporters. Daniels, however, acknowledged the need for better execution in such situations. "I just gotta execute better in that situation, regardless of a flag or not," Daniels stated. "Fourth down … don’t die with the ball, so I have to be better in that spot."
Daniels appeared to be referencing a flag that had been thrown, which he may have believed was for defensive offside, a penalty that could have granted Washington a first down. Instead, the flag was for an illegal shift by running back Rachaad White, a penalty the 49ers declined.
The Commanders have faced scrutiny for game management issues in recent weeks. Last week, they were criticized for clock mismanagement during overtime in a tie game against the Giants. In that instance, with a first down in field goal range and over 50 seconds remaining, Quinn and Daniels opted for a quarterback run with no timeouts and less than 10 seconds left, ultimately leading to the game clock expiring before they could attempt a field goal.
Washington's loss to the 49ers brings their record to 1-4-1 as they head into their bye week. They are scheduled to face the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 8.
