House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer has strongly criticized Democrats for their response to President Donald Trump's involvement in the America 250 celebration, labeling their accusations as politically motivated and reflecting a "hatred" for the former president.
Comer's remarks came in response to a report from Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., the top Democrat on the House Natural Resources Committee. The 55-page report accused Trump of transforming the America 250 celebration into a partisan event that advanced his personal political and religious agenda. The report alleged that a "shadow organization," Freedom 250 LLC, was created to sell access to Trump, redirect donor funds, and enrich Trump allies through contracts, especially after the official America 250 Commission reportedly resisted Trump's demands.
Some Democrats have indicated that congressional scrutiny of these events could follow if they regain the House majority in November. Rep. Adelita Grijalva, D-Ariz., suggested an investigation would occur.
Comer, however, dismissed these criticisms, asserting that Democrats are more focused on investigating Trump than on substantive oversight. "Oversight is in full swing," Comer stated, contrasting it with the Democratic stance. "We are investigating waste, fraud and abuse. That's what the Oversight Committee is about... President Trump made the focus about honoring our heroes and being proud to be an American, and all the Democrats want to do is say, 'If you vote for us, we'll investigate Trump for wasting money on an independent celebration.'"
He further argued that the Democrats' focus on the celebration, including its mention of Christianity, highlights their opposition to Trump, even when the nation's founding was rooted in the pursuit of religious freedom. Comer expressed concern that a Democratic House majority would prioritize investigating and harassing Trump over national issues.
"[Democrats] would rather Donald Trump fail and America fail than celebrate the success of our founding fathers and the fact that we are the greatest nation on the planet," Comer said on "The Big Weekend Show." "We are the greatest nation in the history of the world. Anyone can become anything in America because of the sacrifices of our founding fathers, the sacrifices of our soldiers, the sacrifices of our American heroes, and that's what last night was all about."
