House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., has pushed back against Democratic accusations that President Donald Trump exploited the America 250th birthday celebration for political and financial gain. Comer asserted that these criticisms are driven by a dislike for Trump rather than a genuine concern for the nation.

"Democrats would rather Donald Trump fail and America fail than celebrate the success of our founding fathers and the fact that we are the greatest nation on the planet," Comer stated on "The Big Weekend Show." He characterized the celebration as a moment to honor American heroes and express pride in the country.

Comer's remarks followed the release of a 55-page report by House Democrats, led by Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif.,. The report alleges that the Trump administration transformed the non-political celebration of the nation's semiquincentennial into a partisan event that served Trump's personal, political, and religious agendas. According to the report, a shadow organization called Freedom 250 LLC was created and became central to the celebrations after the official America 250 Commission declined to meet Trump's demands. The report further claims this group sold access to Trump, diverted donor funds intended for America250, and enriched Trump allies through contracts.

Some Democrats have indicated that the matter could be subject to congressional investigation should they regain the majority in the House. Rep. Adelita Grijalva, D-Ariz., expressed belief that an investigation would occur if Democrats win.

However, Comer dismissed these claims as politically motivated, suggesting that Democrats are more interested in pursuing investigations against Trump than in conducting meaningful oversight. "Oversight is in full swing," Comer responded to the idea of future investigations. "We are investigating waste, fraud and abuse. That's what the Oversight Committee is about... All they're going to do if they flip the House and become the majority in the House is investigate and harass Donald Trump."

Comer contended that Trump's focus for the America 250 celebration was on honoring heroes and fostering national pride. He characterized the Democratic opposition as an attempt to scrutinize the event for perceived waste and its mentions of Christianity, contrasting it with the nation's founding principles of religious freedom. Comer suggested that if Democrats regain control of the House, their primary action would be to investigate and harass former President Trump.
