Comedians Revolt as SiriusXM Rebrand Cuts Hundreds from Comedy Channel

SiriusXM's rebranding of its Raw Dog Comedy channel to "Sebastian Maniscalco's Comedy Radio" has sparked widespread criticism from comedians who say the change has removed hundreds of performers from the programming, significantly impacting their royalty income.

The channel's active roster reportedly shrank by 66%, from 812 featured comedians in April to 275 by September, with more than 75% of airplay now concentrated on the top 50 comedians. This shift has disproportionately affected what industry advocates describe as the "middle class of comedy"—working comedians who rely on consistent airplay for supplemental income but are not yet household names.

Veteran comedian Rich Vos, who previously ranked among the 20 most-played comedians on the channel, stated that while he remains busy due to his long career, the change significantly harms less established performers. "There's a lot of comics that aren't doing as well as I do," Vos told Fox News Digital. "I've been around for over 40 years. So, there's comics that have been doing it five, 10 years and it's tougher for them. These are the comics that are really getting hurt by this."

Comedians can earn royalties, typically around $15 per play, when their recorded performances air on satellite radio. The reduction in airplay directly translates to a loss of this income stream for those cut from the rotation.

Notable comedians, including Patton Oswalt and Michelle Wolf, have publicly called on Sebastian Maniscalco to intervene. Oswalt, in an Instagram video addressed to Maniscalco, urged him to help restore airplay for affected performers, emphasizing the importance of new voices in comedy. "I know you didn't mean to do anything bad by doing it. You can easily reverse this decision. Get those young comedians back on the Sirius channel. Let them get those checks. Let them keep working," Oswalt said.

SiriusXM, in a statement, attributed the discontinuation of Raw Comedy to the channel's "underperformance" and stated the decision predated Maniscalco's involvement. "While the challenges facing working comedians are bigger than any one person or decision, we remain committed, as we have for more than two decades, to making SiriusXM a place where comedians at every stage of their careers can be heard," the company said.

Maniscalco acknowledged the concerns in an Instagram video, stating he had "nothing to do with removing Raw Comedy from SiriusXM" and asked for patience as he works to build out the new channel, aiming to feature a wider range of comedians. SiriusXM added that it continues to invest in comedians and offers a diverse range of comedy programming across its channels.
