Comedians Criticize Sebastian Maniscalco's SiriusXM Channel Over Impact on Working Comics

Comedian Sebastian Maniscalco is facing criticism from peers who argue that his new SiriusXM channel is negatively impacting the financial stability and visibility of working-class comedians. The change, which saw the "Raw Comedy" channel rebranded to "Sebastian Maniscalco's Comedy Radio" earlier this year, is alleged to have significantly reduced the number of artists featured and the royalties they receive.

Stand Up for Stand Up, a nonprofit supporting comedians, published an article stating that the channel shifted from featuring over 800 comedians to a narrower group. The organization claims that over 75% of the plays now go to the top 50 artists, disproportionately benefiting established celebrity comedians.

Comedians like Matt Ruby and Liz Miele have voiced concerns. Ruby, writing on his Substack, suggested the channel is "crushing middle class comedians who rely on payments from the company to pad income." Miele, in an Instagram video, elaborated that the channel now primarily features deceased famous comedians and a select few well-known living performers, impacting the passive revenue and discoverability for emerging artists.

Gianmarco Soresi and Ashley Ray have also taken to social media to express their displeasure. Soresi posted a message questioning Maniscalco's actions, while Ray stated that the reduced income from the channel significantly impacted her finances.

Some prominent comedians, including Patton Oswalt, Michelle Wolf, and Margaret Cho, have publicly urged Maniscalco to address the situation. Oswalt, in a Facebook video, asked Maniscalco to reverse the decision and reinstate opportunities for younger comedians. Wolf and Cho also appealed for Maniscalco to give working comedians a chance.

However, the comedian also has supporters who believe Maniscalco is not solely responsible for the programming changes. Some social media users have pointed out that SiriusXM made the decision, not Maniscalco directly, and that his name is attached to the channel as part of a deal. One user defended Maniscalco, stating he has a history of supporting younger comics.

In response to the controversy, SiriusXM released a statement asserting that the company works with creative partners to optimize listener experience. The statement noted that the launch of Sebastian Maniscalco's Comedy Radio brought a "new creative direction and a regularly evolving programming mix." SiriusXM also emphasized its continued investment in comedians, claiming to be the largest audio platform for comedy with a wide range of offerings.

SiriusXM had previously announced the new channel in April, describing it as being "curated and headlined by Maniscalco."
